What Makes a Program "Free Software"?

Not all free software is the same. Understanding license types helps you use programs within their terms.

Freeware

Free to use at no cost, but the source code remains proprietary. You can download, install, and run it, but you cannot modify or redistribute it. Examples include many popular tools like Skype, IrfanView, and older versions of WinZip.

Closed source

Open-Source Software

The source code is publicly available and can be inspected, modified, and distributed. Open-source does not always mean free of cost, but the vast majority of open-source software is also free. Examples: VLC, GIMP, LibreOffice, Firefox.

Source available

Free Software / GNU

In the sense defined by the Free Software Foundation and GNU project, "free software" means freedom — the freedom to run, study, change, and distribute. The GPL (GNU Public License) is the most common copyleft license that ensures these freedoms are preserved in all derivatives.

Copyleft / GPL

Shareware

Distributed freely for a trial period or with limited features — after which payment is expected. The "try before you buy" model. We include shareware on FreeSoft.cc and clearly label it so you always know what you're downloading. Older shareware from the '90s and 2000s remains freely usable.

How We Select and List Software

FreeSoft.cc is a directory, not a host. We curate and link — we do not store binaries or bypass official distribution channels. Every listing follows three core principles.

  • Official download sources only

All download links point directly to official project websites, GitHub repositories, SourceForge, or the developer's own distribution page. We never link to third-party mirrors that modify or bundle software.

  • License type verified and labeled

Every listing clearly identifies whether it's freeware, open-source, shareware, or free-with-paid-upgrade. We verify license information before publishing so you always know what you're agreeing to.

  • No binaries hosted on FreeSoft.cc

We do not host, repackage, or redistribute software files. FreeSoft.cc is purely an index. This ensures you always get the software directly from its creator, with no intermediary risk of tampering or bundled adware.

Why Use a Software Directory?

Search engines surface download sites, many of which bundle adware or upsell unwanted software. A curated directory skips the noise — you get organized, categorized, trustworthy listings pointing directly to the right source.

No bundled installers or adware traps
Organized by category — not cluttered search results
License type labeled on every listing
Direct links to developer and official sources

About FreeSoft.cc

FreeSoft.cc has been helping users find safe, free software since the early 2000s — back when freeware directories were the web's most trusted resource for finding software that didn't cost a thing. The internet has changed, but the need for a trustworthy, curated guide to free software remains.

We don't host downloads, we don't bundle installers, and we don't take a cut from developers. We just organize and link, so you can find what you need and get it directly from the source.
